Perfume Wafts Across Germany as Box Office Smash

Half of all movie tickets sold last weekend in Germany were for the eagerly anticipated film version of German writer Patrick Süskind's global bestseller "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer".

The cast of "Perfume" (from left to right): British actors Alan Rickman, Rachel Hurd-Wood and Ben Whishaw, who plays Grenouille, at the film's premiere in Munich on September 7 with Jessica Schwarz, one of several German actresses who play supporting roles in the film. Dustin Hoffman also plays a leading role as a Parisian master scentmaker.

More than 1,04 million moviegoers opted for the oddly compelling tale set in 18th century France, a market share of 53 percent, Munich-based Constantin films announced on Monday. The Constantin production, directed by Germany's acclaimed cinematic maestro Tom Tykwer in English with an international cast, thus drew every second moviegoer in the nation. According to dpa, it pushed Pixar Studios animated production "Cars" into second place and "Miami Vice", starring Irish bad boy actor Colin Farrell and handsome Jamie Foxx of "Ray" fame, into third place.

"Das Parfum" also did well on its opening weekend in Austria, where it sold 131,000 tickets, and in Switzerland, with 53,000 tickets sold. The figures were recorded from September 14 to 17 in 339 Cinemaxx movie theaters with some 89,000 seats, dpa reported.

"Perfume", which is due to open in the United States on December 8, tells the story of a strange yet gifted outcast named Jean-Baptiste Grenouille. Born with no smell, he develops a superior olfactory sense, which he uses to create the world's finest perfumes. His work, however, takes a dark turn as he searches for the ultimate scent.
