German and American Experts Tackle Legal Questions in the Fight Against Terrorism

The Federal Foreign Office and the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law convened a German-American colloquium to address legal questions in the fight against global terrorism.

Held in Berlin on Thursday and Friday, the gathering was spearheaded by German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, according to a government statement. It aimed to expand upon existing bilateral political dialogue on the legal framework for combating terrorism to a deeper scientific dimension. Beyond basic international law, cooperation in the pursuit of wanted criminals and the effective preemption of threats through repression and prevention were on the agenda.

High-ranking German and American government officials, as well as renowned academics from both countries, took part in the colloquium, which was closed to the media. Steinmeier met with all attendees on Friday morning.

Among the participants were John B. Bellinger III, legal adviser to the U.S. State Department; August Hanning, state secretary in the German Federal Interior Ministry; Rüdiger Wolfrum and Armin von Bogdandy, the directors of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law; and Ruth Wedgewood, director of the international law program at the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University.
