The Week in Germany: Business and Technology October 20, 2006 Chancellor Angela Merkel was guest of honor at a ceremony marking the tenth anniversary of AMD's presence in Dresden. The US chip producer is a major investor in eastern Germany.
Merkel praised AMD's record in Saxony, saying the company has long since
established itself as a quality semiconductor manufacturer in Dresden.
She underscored the fact that AMD has created 3,000 jobs for highly skilled
workers and that it can be proud of what it has achieved. AMD stands for Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. Founded in 1969, the company has become one of the world's leading manufacturers of microprocessors with development and production sites in the United States, Asia, and Europe. AMD has two semiconductor plants and a design center in Dresden. As of the end of 2005 it had invested around 4 billion dollars there. With the planned expansion of production capacities announced in May the company's overall investment in Dresden is set to increase to 8 billion dollars. AMD currently has a workforce of more than 3,000 at its Dresden sites,
producing processor families for desktop and mobile applications as well
as for servers and workstations.
