The Week in Germany: Culture October 27, 2006 Goethe Institute Kicks Off Short Film Competition to Mark Human Rights Day Looking ahead to the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, 2008, the Goethe Institute has initiated a short film competition to honor International Human Rights Day. Organized in conjunction with the Remembrance and Future Fund of the German government, the films may be about the involvement of individuals or entire organizations in promoting human rights. The international competition is called "All human beings are born free and equal ", and contestants are also encouraged to explore the boundaries of "freedom" and "equality" in their submissions, according to the Goethe Institute. Submissions may be no longer than 15 minutes, and may range from classic documentaries to full animation. Winners will receive a 2,000 euro ($2,533) cash prize each and will be invited to screen their films in fall 2007 at the Munich International Festival of Film Schools, or Filmfest München, as well as at the Berlin International Film Festival, or Berlinale, in February 2008. The Goethe Institute has contacted students at film and art schools in Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Russia, Ukraine, Israel and the United States. The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2007. The best short films from each country will be selected. International Human Rights Day is marked every year on December 10 with
activities led by the Office of the United Nations Commissioner for Human
Rights in Geneva, New York and in the field, wherever the UN is active. Links:
