The Week in Germany: Culture November 3, 2006 U.S. Army General Norman Schwarzkopf Honored as 2006 Distinguished German-American of the Year As TWIG went to press, the United German-American Committee was due to honor General and Mrs. H. Norman Schwarzkopf on Saturday at its Council of 1000 Gala. The black-tie ceremony was held at the German American Social Club of Cape Coral, Florida, a member club of the UGAC. General Schwarzkopf was selected as a prominent German-American for his outstanding military career. He is best known as Commander of Operations for Desert Storm in 1991.
Since his retirement he has devoted himself to many civic and philanthropic activities. Brenda Schwarzkopf (nee Holsinger) hails from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Mrs. Schwarzkopf has been involved with chidren's day-care centers, cub scouts, youth athletic teams, and family support groups to name a few of her activities. They have three children, Cynthia, Jessica, and Christian. The Distinguished German-American of the Year Award provides national recognition for outstanding leadership and achievement of an American of German-speaking ancestry in business, the arts, education, science, politics and society. Bern E. Deichmann, President of the UGAC, stated that he is delighted that General and Mrs. Schwarzkopf have agreed to be honored. Their dedicated leadership and service exemplifies the reason the award was established in 1987. Previous recipients have included, among others, the 1999 Nobel Prize
