The Week in Germany: Culture December 8, 2006 Preserving a Pioneering Place of Design: Bauhaus in Dessau Celebrates 80th Anniversary
The creative class across the globe continues to be inspired by Bauhaus, the most influential school of architecture, design and art of the 20th century. The Bauhaus Building in the eastern German city of Dessau has just celebrated its 80th anniversary and the conclusion of a 10-year renovation. "With its revolutionary ideas the style of the Bauhaus has decisively shaped architecture, design and art of the 20th century. A key cultural policy task for Germany is to contribute to the preservation of the historical Bauhaus and to continue to support the public promotion of what were pioneering ideas at the time," Bernd Naumann, Germany's state secretary for culture and media, said in a congratulatory statement.
To mark the occasion, the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation hosted a two-day conference called "Modern Internationalism - global World Culture" and opened an exhibition on Saturday under the apt heading "Icon of Modernism". Sponsored by the state of Saxony-Anhalt, it highlights the unique architectural features of the building and reveals the challenges faced during its restoration. The Bauhaus was founded in 1919 in Weimar by German architect Walter
Gropius, who designed the Bauhaus at Dessau in 1925. Forced to close amid
Nazi pressure in 1933, a new Bauhaus briefly flourished again in America,
where Gropius designed buildings for several major cities. UNESCO added
several Bauhaus buildings in both Weimar and Dessau to its list of world
heritage sites in 1996.
