France, Germany and Poland on Tuesday agreed the creation of a new joint battle group, said a statement by leaders of the three countries after a one-day summit.

The Franco-German-Polish battle group will become operational in 2012, said French President Jacques Chirac. All three countries are members of both the NATO alliance and the EU.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel hosted Chirac and Polish President Lech Kaczynski at the summit in the western German town of Mettlach.

Merkel reacted to calls for slowing down Turkey's European Union membership bid with demands for a new report on Ankara's compliance with EU standards to be issued between Turkish elections in autumn 2007 and European Parliament elections in spring 2009.

The German Chancellor said a final decision on steps aimed at Turkey was expected at an EU summit in Brussels on December 14 and 15. (dpa)
