The Week in Germany: Culture December 15, 2006 Will the Real Santa Please Stand Up? He's Just a Mechanical Deer Ride and a Ho, Ho, Ho Away...
Children could become confused with all the "Santas" around during the the holiday season, so the northern German city of Celle came up with a nifty idea to remedy this annual state of confusion - Germany's first ever Santa contest. As reported by National Public Radio (NPR), the real Santa is 42-year-old television news reporter Oliver Deuker. Celle, located northeast of Hanover in Lower Saxony state, went all out for the competition. Each wannabe Santa had to try his hand at tree-trimming and bellow out his most convincing "ho, ho, ho".
Yet another activity was, however, more reminiscent of Texas than Germany's flat northern heathlands: The mechanical reindeer ride was surely the wildest "Santa test". According to the NPR report, the winner walked away with $2,500 in cash,
and the grand prize for ladies competing in a separate Santa's helper
contest was an Egyptian vacation for two. Celle seems intent on repeating
the contest, so stay tuned for next year's "Germany's Next Santa"
contest. The trickiest part could be convincing the nations' kids that
it's always the same guy who keeps winning the title over and over again.
