Kino Fever: "The Lives of Others" gets the Oscar Nod

"Lives" is set in East Berlin in 1984

With the selection of “The Lives of Others” (Das Leben der Anderen) to compete in the category of Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars, German cinema has prospects of a fairytale ending to an already stellar 2006.

Earlier this month, the debut film by director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck competed in the same category for a Golden Globe award but had to concede to the Japan-US co-production, “Letters from Iwo Jima.” Nevertheless, if Donnersmarck does bring home what would be the third German Academy Award, he may have a hard time clearing space on a crowded mantle: “Lives” has already scooped up seven Lolas at the German Film Awards and the European Film Award.

TWIG spoke with Donnersmarck in November, 2006, when Oscar rumors had already begun to surface. Read the interview here.

New German Cinema Special:

While the Oscar nod will probably help “Lives” get the attention it deserves in the US, TWIG hopes that the spotlight will also extend to other German films. In that spirit, we take a look at two outstanding German films from 2006 that we were lucky enough to catch at the Goethe Institute festival of new films from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland this week:

"Wholetrain" - Directed by Florian Gaag

"Summer in Berlin" - Directed by Andreas Dresen
