Aachen Scientists Develop 'Smart' Wheelchair

Researchers at Aachen's renowned Technical University have developed a new wheelchair that boosts mobility and promotes an independent lifestyle for the severely disabled.

As recently reported by Deutsche Welle, this "smart" wheelchair can be steered by its occupant solely by moving his or her head or facial muscles. The chair is equipped with a camera that records these facial movements and sends them to an onboard computer that responds accordingly via special software that interprets the signals.

"The steering of the chair depends on the characteristics of each patient," Ulrich Canzler, head of the university's computer science department, told DW. "For patients who can only move their eyelids or shift their eyebrows we can program these movements as the steering signals."
