The Week in Germany: Current Affairs February 2, 2007 Merkel Visits Middle East to Engage Neighboring States in Resolving the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
Just one day after the meeting of the Mid-East quartet in Washington on February 2, Chancellor Angela Merkel will travel to the region for three days to discuss the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with the leaders of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait. The focus of the Chancellor’s visit will be to advance the role of these neighboring governments in finding a solution to the conflict. Earlier this week, Saudi Arabia and Egypt made offers to act as mediators in the inner-Palestinian conflict between Hamas and Fatah. Merkel’s visit is part of a concerted effort to revive the Middle East peace process that Germany has led as current president of the European Council. To the groundwork for Quartet’s meeting Friday, Merkel has meet with most of the key players in the region in recent months. She met with Egyptian president Hosni Mubarek and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in December. On the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos in January she met with Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas. Last week, she met with King Abdullah II of Jordan in Berlin. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice announced Friday’s meeting of the Quartet in Washington in Berlin when she met with Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on January 17. Links:
