The Week in Germany: Sports March 30, 2007 Germany Stands a Good Chance of Getting 2011 Women's World Cup, National
Soccer Supremo Suggests
Germany has an excellent chance of hosting the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup, according to national soccer supremo Theo Zwanziger. The Women's World Cup is held every four years. Zwanziger told the Munich-based weekly newsmagazine Focus that it was now Europe's turn again, after the United States hosted the event in 1999 and 2003, and China hosts the next edition of the tournament later this year. The last Women's World Cup held in Europe was in Sweden in 1995.
Germany's main European rival in the bid is France. But Zwanziger claimed that women's soccer is more popular among the Germans than the French. Other bidders are Switzerland, Peru, Canada and Australia. The host country will be elected on August 31 by the executive board of global governing soccer body FIFA. Zwanziger, 61, is president of the German Football Federation (DFB), which earlier this month in Berlin revealed its slogan and emblem for the 2011 bidding. According to the DFB, 24 German cities have already expressed their interest to be a host city for the international women's soccer tournament. Germany's Women's National Team, under head coach Silvia Neid, are the reigning world and European champions. As reported by uefa.com, the team's legendary 34-year-old defender Steffi Jones recently announced her retirement from international soccer just months before the next Women's World Cup in China, to be held this year from September 10 to 30. China also hosted the event in 1991. Founded in Basel, Switzerland, in 1954, UEFA - the Union of European
Football Associations - is the governing body of soccer on the continent
of Europe. FIFA is based in the Swiss metropolis of Zurich. (TWIG/dpa)
