The Week in Germany: Culture April 13, 2007 Art Cologne - "the mother of all art fairs" - Moves to the
Spring
Some 190 art dealers from Germany and all over the world are taking part in this year's Art Cologne fair - the world's longest running annual fair for modern and contemporary art - which is being held from April 18 to 22 instead of its usual autumn time slot. This year, the work of new galleries is being promoted within the framework of a New Contemporaries show, including a new Open Space sale exhibition for contemporary art with 46 galleries showcasing the works of more than 50 artists. Many of the sculptures and installations have been created exclusively for this year's Art Cologne. The idea of attracting gallery owners, museum experts, collectors and art connoisseurs to one location and turning it into a huge art marketplace was first tried out in Cologne in 1967. The event started out as the "Cologne art market" with leading avant-garde gallery owners Rudolf Zwirner and Hein Stünke among the 18 exhibitors. It was a time of experimentation and the aim was to introduce people to art in an unconventional manner. The fair started off by attracting 15,000 visitors, and since then it
has gone from strength to strength. By the late1980s, Art Cologne had
gained the reputation of being the most important international fair for
modern and contemporary art in the world. With the art market booming,
the fair has also been successfully copied in many cities from Basel to
London and from Berlin to Miami. Collectors and dealers are now eagerly awaiting the latest innovation,
namely this year's decision not to open in the autumn as usual but in
the spring instead. The organizers of the "mother of all art fairs"
hope this will give the event more prominence among the numerous competing
art exhibitions being held the world over. The traditional art event on the banks of the Rhine River has even spawned
its own "offspring": From September 19 to 23 the "Art Cologne
Palma de Mallorca" will open its doors to the public on the Mediterranean
island. (dpa) Links:
