The Week in Germany: Culture May 4, 2007 German Information Center Video Spots ask America: “What do you know about Europe?”
Viewers of Deutsche Welle’s North America programming, PBS, and political talk shows on Washington DC’s ABC affiliate, Channel Seven will be taken to school on the topic of the European Union with a series of light-hearted 15 second spots commissioned by the German Information Center. In the ads, grade schoolers respond to their teacher’s question “What do you know about Europe” with fantasy-filled, but still mostly true answers about the twenty-seven member union, which recently celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. When two boys scoff at a girl’s suggestion that every girl in Europe is a princess, she responds by pointing out, correctly, that Europe also has women presidents, alluding to prominent leaders such as Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, who is also the current president of the European Union. The ads feature students and teachers from the German School of Washington,
in Potomac Maryland, and was produced by filmmaker Stephan Bachenheimer.
They will run until the end of June.
