German Jazz Swings its way to North Carolina for Good Cause

Jazz has deep roots in North Carolina. Max Roach, Thelonious Monk, Percy Heath, and John Coltrane were all born in the state, and Billy Strayhorn called Hillsborough his second home for years.

The sound that eventually spread around the globe from the towns where these jazz legends were born will echo back across the Atlantic when the Munich Swing Stars perform at the charity event "Jazz in the Village" on Friday, May 11 in Charlotte.

Lufthansa, which is sponsoring the event along with the State of Bavaria, will raffle off one roundtrip ticket to Germany. The proceeds will to toward supporting an array of German-American projects, including scholarships for students from UNC Charlotte to study in Germany.

Last year, the annual event attracted 300 jazz fans and raised over $30,000 for projects aimed at enhancing German-American cooperation. Event organizer Kurt Waldthausen says that he hopes to attract 400 attendees to this year’s event. Waldthausen is a consultant to German companies operating in the US and is also the Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic in Charlotte.
