The Week in Germany: Culture May 4, 2007 Leo Baeck Institute Presents its Rich Collection on German-Jewish Culture in a European Context Online
The treasures of the Leo Baeck Institute’s Center for Jewish History, which contains first editions Heinrich Heine and Moses Mendelsohn, over 1300 memoirs, and 35,000 photographs, are the subject of a new website. “The German-Jewish Impact on European Culture” highlights centuries of cultural contributions by German-Speaking Jews based on books, documents, and paintings from the LBI’s collections. These important artifacts, ranging from Glückel von Hameln’s 18th century feminist memoir to first editions of works by Franz Kafka and Max Brod, are presented in an online archeology of the ideas that shaped our modern world. The site covers innovations such as psychoanalysis, the modern department store and Bauhaus design. The site, which was designed with support from the German Information Center, which also publishes The Week in Germany is still in development and will be expanded considerably. The initial entries are already online at www.lbi.org/culture and provide a taste of what is to come. Links: The German-Jewish Impact on European
