The Week in Germany: Sports June 22, 2007 Hockey: Germany Wins Women's Setanta Sports Trophy in Ireland
The German women's team won the inaugural Women's Setanta Sports Trophy at the Dublin National Hockey Stadium with a 5-2 defeat of South Africa in the final on Sunday (June 17). As reported by the Irish Hockey Association, Ireland claimed third place, defeating Scotland 2-1 earlier in the day. German players Maike Stoeckel and Natascha Keller scored two goals in the first 18 minutes and the German team "continued to dominate possession" through much of the game, according to the IHA report. But South Africa started strong in the second half and Shelly Russell scored from close range after a smooth pass from teammate Leslie-Anne George. The German team, the defending Olympic champion in the sport, however scored two more goals within five minutes through penalty corners by Anke Kuhn and Fanne Rinne. South Africa Captain Marsha Marescia scored a second goal for her team with a penalty corner. Germany scored a fifth and final goal from a penalty corner by Maria Müller in the last play of the game. The German victory bodes well for the women's team in the upcoming EuroHockey
Nations Championships, to be held from August 18-25 in Manchester, England. Links: The full story at WorldHockey.org EuroHockey Nations Championship 2007 Germany
