Jupp Derwall, who coached Germany's national soccer team to the European title in 1980 and a runner-up finish at the 1982 World Cup, has died. He was 80.

He died Tuesday after a brief illness, the Deutscher Fussball-Bund (DFB), or German soccer federation said, without elaborating further.

Josef "Jupp" Derwall became coach in 1978 after working as an assistant to Helmut Schön for eight years. In 1982, Derwall led Germany to a second place finish at the FIFA World Cup in Spain.

He lost the job in 1984 when Germany failed to advance from the first round at the European Championship in France. His successor was German soccer legend Franz Beckenbauer.

Derwall had a record of 45 wins, 11 losses and 11 defeats as Germany's coach. His run of 23 games without defeat is still a record.

In 1984, Derwall turned down offers to coach in the Bundesliga and went instead to Galatasaray Istanbul and won the Turkish championship in 1987. He returned to Germany in 1989.

Derwall was born on March 10, 1927 in Würselen, a village close to Aachen. In 1953, when he was a professional soccer player, his team Alemania Aachen had reached the DFB Cup final, but lost 2-1 to Rot-Weiß Essen. He went on to play two more times in the prestigious final with his new club Fortuna Düsseldorf, which lost on both occassions.

Deutscher Fussball-Bund (DFB) President Dr. Theo Zwanziger said: "Because of Jupp Derwall's work, the German national team celebrated some major triumphs in the 1970's and 1980's. He was blessed with a bright and cheerful coaching style. He led without offending people. His expert knowledge was widely recognized. The DFB loses an outstanding coach, who held a position among the best international coaches in his prime." (TWIG/AP)
