The Week in Germany: Business, Technology and the Environment August 31, 2007 Chinese Journalists Impressed with German Chancellor German Chancellor Angela Merkel met Tuesday with four Chinese journalists who have been critical of the government during the second day of her visit to China. Following the meeting in a hotel in Beijing the journalists said they were impressed with the German leader. The former editor-in-chief of a supplement to the China Youth Daily, Li Datong, said: "The meeting shows that the chancellor gives great importance to the values of democracy and liberty in China." Datong was forced from his editing post two years ago for running reports that angered authorities. The journalists and Merkel discussed the Chinese media climate, including the opportunities to criticize and the consequences of doing so, since the opening-up and reform of the late 70s, reported diplomatic sources. Social changes in China were also a topic. The environment and business were at the top of the agenda during Merkel's
three-day trip, her second to China as chancellor. Two business deals
and a pact on environmental cooperation were inked on Monday. Merkel on Human Rights — Olympic Games in China a Major Opportunity (from Germany.info)
