The Week in Germany: Culture October 26, 2007 GERMANORIGINality Oktoberfest in Washington
Since early 2007, the German Embassy in Washington has opened its doors for American young leaders and others with a special connection to Germany. Last Friday, (October 19) the Embassy hosted its third black-tie Gala this year as part of the event series (Berlin-DC Capital Connexion). Following on from the Cologne Carnival in February and the “Summer Soccer Sneaker Gala” in July, the motto of Friday’s party was “GERMANORIGINality”, a celebration of German heritage in the United States. The gala marked a milestone in the GERMANORIGINality campaign. On the occasion of German-American Day 2007 (October 6), transportation Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee and German Ambassador Klaus Scharioth had introduced the campaign in a speech to members of Congress. Through the website www.GERMANORIGNality.com, the German Information Center USA (GIC) and the German National Tourist Office in New York are inviting all Americans to discover the German roots of American society and history. In his greeting to the guests, Georg Schulze Zumkley, Deputy Director of the GIC said with a wink, “Do you know how intimately Americans are connected to the German-American legacy? Sometimes the relationship is quite close; after all, Levi Strauss, a German-American, invented jeans.” The GIC organized the GERMANORIGINality Oktoberfest in cooperation with the event planners ThingsToDoDC. The German Embassy also has a partnership with the capital’s soccer team, DC United, and the proceeds of the silent auction and all donations benefited the club’s non-profit sister organization “United for DC”. United for DC will use these funds to organize sports and education programs for disadvantaged Washington, DC youth. The spectacular main prize of the silent auction, a helicopter tour of New York City, was donated by Halcyon Private jets and fetched a four-figure sum for the youth programs. The theme of the evening was “Discover GERMANORIGNality”, and many of the guests discussed their own ancestors who were German immigrants. Many members of the US Armed Forces in attendance said they felt transported back to their time in Germany. “We will never forget our time in Germany,” said a Lt. Colonel of the Air Force, “It’s great that we can be here to revive those memories at the German Embassy”. Everyone in attendance will remember a special evening at the German Embassy; the guests took home a beer stein with the GERMANORIGINality logo home as a gift.
