The Week in Germany: Business, Technology and the Environment November 9, 2007 Kassel Becomes First German City to be Powered by "Green Electricity"
Kassel is now the first German city to provide its inhabitants with electricity from regenerative sources. Since October 30 the "green electricity", which comes from Scandinavian hydroelectric power sources, has been powering the city. Kassel’s communal energy provider, the Städtische Werke AG, switched the energy supplier to climate neutral sources without any extra costs for the customers. They were able to keep the prices stable because of the large amount of energy purchased and length of the contract, which runs for five years. Kassel’s Mayor Bertram Hilgen viewed the changing of electricity supplier as an important step in the restructuring of the energy industry. Kassel Mayor Bertram Hilgen said the switch would make the city a "trendsetter in environmental protection and renewable energy use." The Hessian city has a history of using climate-friendly energy methods,
as it had already used community heating in the 1980’s. Kassel plans
several more initiatives increase the use of environmentally friendly,
renewable energy, said Hilgen. The next aim is to install solar panels
on all suitable buildings. (Source: Young
