German American National Congress Honors Educator Christa Garcia with Elsbeth Seewald Award

Christa Garcia

In recognition of 40 years of service promoting the German language and culture in the US, Chicago-area educator Christa Garcia has received the Elsbeth Seewald award from the German American National Congress (DANK).

Garcia, who has a masters degree in German language and literature from the University of Iowa, has taught German at elementary through university levels and led corporate language instruction for German companies. She has also served as a teacher trainer for Boards of Education.

She has also served as National President of the DANK, one of the premier German-American heritage organizations in the US. Currently, she is chairman of the German American Education Fund, a non-profit organization promoting the study of German language and culture, and superintendent of the DANK schools in the Chicago area, which provide weekly German instruction. She is also a trustee of the German Language School Conference.

Inke Pinkert Sältzer, who oversees Germany’s official foreign schools in the US, praised Garcia for her tireless efforts on behalf of the German-American friendship and thanked her for her work as a US partner of German educational and cultural institutions in the US.

“She always makes an impression with her profound knowledge, pedagogical wisdom, high energy, and professionalism”, said Sältzer.

The Elsbeth Seewald award is named for a former president of DANK who was instrumental in establishing German-American day (October 6), which was proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan in October, 1987.
