German Embassy Honored by Making it Into Final Top Five at Berlin Media and Political Publishers' Annual Awards

The German Embassy celebrated Germany's EU Presidency during the first half of 2007 in style with gala events (top left) and through the EU Open House (remaining photos) on May 12 which drew some 38,000 visitors to 22 EU embassies in Washington. The past year has been an exciting and eventful one for the German Embassy in Washington, with Germany holding both the EU and G8 Presidencies in 2007.

Now all the hard work of the Embassy's German Information Center USA and Press Department is due to receive a special honorable mention at the "2007 Politikaward" gala awards ceremony held by Helios Media, a Berlin-based media group and publishing house, on Nov. 26 in the German capital.

The GIC USA submitted a "German EU Presidency" package on behalf of the German Embassy for an award in one of nine categories called "campaigns by public institutions". The German Embassy will receive a special honorable mention at the ceremony for its campaign which made it a finalist in the top five among 30 entries. The first-place winner will be announced at the gala event in Berlin.

In 2006, the Government of Austria won the Politikaward in the same category for its own EU information campaign (Austria held the EU Presidency during the first half of 2006). And in 2005 the state government of the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt won the same award for its "Wir stehen früher auf" (We get up earlier) multimedia campaign.

The jewel in the crown of public diplomacy activities in Washington relating to the Jan. 1 to July 1 2007 German EU Presidency was the May 12 "EU Open House" held at 22 EU embassies across Washington. It was initiated and coordinated by the German Embassy.

“We want to illustrate that we can also celebrate right here what we in the European Union have achieved in terms of openness and of removing borders,” German Ambassador Klaus Scharioth said at the time. “We are citizens of this city, we live in this city and so we simply wanted to reach out and invite Washingtonians to visit us on our own premises to find out about our work about Europe and about our efforts to further deepen the relationship with the USA.”

At present Portugal holds the 100th rotating six-month EU presidency. Next year's EU Open House will be coordinated by Slovenia, which will pick up the baton from Portugal in January 2008. France will hold the EU Presidency during the second half of 2008.

The Germany Embassy's Press Department conducts all business relating to the media, which includes hosting high-ranking official visitors from Germany, manages the Embassy's web presence at www.germany.info, runs public radio and other advertising campaigns for the website and creates fun interactive contests featuring great prizes for participants such as the current "Spot the Bus" campaign.

The German Information Center USA focuses on broad public diplomacy work reaching out to the general public, produces three free electronic newsletters (The Week in Germany, Deutschland Nachrichten, Germany in Class) and other related web content for www.germany.info, creates advertisments for print and other media, answers US citizens queries on Germany and manages public diplomacy campaigns, for instance the recent GermanOriginality heritage campaign with the German National Tourist Office.
