German Ambassador Klaus Scharioth and DC Mayor Adrian Fenty on Nov. 13 together greeted community leaders and members of the Hillcrest and the Palisades neighborhood associations of Washington celebrating an enduring partnership that has brought two separate corners of the city together at a special reception hosted by the German Embassy.

Fenty cited the importance of having actively involved citizens at the grassroots level breathe life into the city. "We really need you - this is what it's all about," he said.

Ambassador Scharioth meanwhile welcomed some 100 guests to the Embassy and expressed his thanks on behalf of the entire staff of some 200 for being so warmly received by the Palisades neighborhood of Northwest Washington.

Following on from the success of the EU Open House last May, during which some 22 EU embassies opened their doors for a day to the public, he also urged everyone to attend the next proposed EU Open House in May 2008. "It was fun, and we would like to do it again and have you come visit us here again at the Embassy," said Scharioth.

The Hillcrest-Palisades Partnership began informally through the regular monthly meetings of the Federation of Citizens Associations in 1996-97. Delegates from both neighborhoods met and discovered that they lived in exact opposite corners of the city. They discussed what they had in common, and considered ways of bringing together the two neighborhoods for mutual benefit and enjoyment, and for the betterment of the city.

Fine dining: The Embassy provided a German-style feast including ham, sausages, fish, sauerkraut, potatoes, salad and apple strudel! (Linda Jackson and Jim Whittaker)

The partnership initially devoted its efforts to support environmental education and initiatives between the Hillcrest neighborhood in Southwest and Palisades neighborhood in Northwest Washington. In 2002, the partnership began a new focus on the arts with the founding of Neighbors through ART. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library helped by providing space for the first show, which included works by over a dozen artists from each neighborhood. Neighbors through ART performances and shows bring residents of the Hillcrest and Palisades neighborhoods together to create and present original works of art.

Fun with friends: Patsy Newell and Mat Thorp. A sprightly senior member of the Palisades Citizens Association, Thorp tirelessly manned a booth representing the PCA last May during the first annual EU Open House at the German Embassy.

The German Embassy was proud to host a 10th anniversary reception for the Hillcrest-Palisades Partnership. We at the Embassy feel this fine working partnership delivers real results and could serve as a role model for many more such partnerships at the local, regional and even international level! We salute the Hillcrest-Palisades Partnership as a shining example of good neighborliness in the US capital.
