The Week in Germany: Culture November 30, 2007 TWIG Turntable – Weekly German Culture Tips
From music downloads to streaming radio to online booksellers and DVD rental by mail, it has never been easier to take in German culture from abroad than it is today. Starting this week, TWIG will provide a jumping off point for voyages of cultural discovery in the weekly “Turntable” column. Each week, we will let you know what is on our turntable, metaphorically speaking – something worth listening too, reading, or watching from the land of ideas that is also available right here in the USA. German Music on the Web This week the TWIG team has decided to provide you with a different type of turntable - a "sampler" of where to find out more about German music. Just click on the individual headings below to navigate your way through the world of German music on the Internet. Happy surfing...and listening! German Music - Brief biographies, sound samples, and CDs from folk music to classical composers to contemporary rock, pop, and hip-hop German music. German Bands, Singers and Related Sites - A cornucopia of information, including links to German bands, provided by Germany for Travellers. Goethe Institute Music - The German global cultural organization's official music site with a comprehensive German music guide of annotated links on music and links to projects of the Goethe Institutes worldwide.
EMAD (Electronic Music from Germany) - Electronic music emanating from Germany is the focus of great attention worldwide. The website "Electronic Music from Germany" informs the reader about current trends and the most important developments over the past few years; it also provides additional links to labels, clubs and festivals and presents selected activities of the Goethe Institute. Electronic music fans might also want to check out this story from Young Germany on "Electronic Beats at the House of World Cultures in Berlin", where the first ever WORLDTRONICS festival has been taking place. Radio Goethe - music listings, including radio stations across the US that play German music, and news in the Radio Goethe magazine. Check out the new Radio Goethe podcast on iTunes or RadioGoethe.org.
GERMANIACdotcom - Calling itself "your guide to discovering German music", this blog is run by an informed fellow named Greg who also happens to be the webmaster of several bands' official websites. It features reviews of new releases and offers an "ask the Germaniac" section where visitors can post queries about German music. DeutschMusikLand.com - This self-styled "greatest site dedicated to nothing but German musik" is visually sparse yet replete with rare facts and figures sure to put a smile on the face of any "Germaniac". German Music Export Office - A virtual place where German musicians are able to meet up with interested parties from other countries, it regularly compiles a hit list of all the songs in foreign countries and publicizes it on the website and provides background information on some of Germany's top legendary music stars. German Music Council - For more in-depth research or those seeking to study music, this is a comprehensive database providing information on more than 10,000 music organizations and institutions in Germany. German National Tourist Office - The NY-based GNTO's guide to classical German music, musicals, jazz, German pop music, varieties and composers. Music of Germany - A sweeping overview from Minnesingers to folk music to Krautrock from the popular free online encyclopedia Wikipedia. Side-Line - News, interviews, reviews and a forum on gothic-industrial music, much of which is made in Germany. Recommendation: Xavier Naidoo Xavier Naidoo comes from Mannheim, a mid-sized city south of the mulitcultural financial metropolis Frankfurt am Main, via South Africa and is of German-Tamil-Egyptian heritage. This particular TWIG editor and former Frankfurt resident can attest to the award-winning Naidoo's musical prowess both as a solo artist and in various collective projects, most notably Die Söhne Mannheims (The Sons of Mannheim). Their 2000 album "Zion" topped the charts in Germany with a blend of hip hop, German rap, soul, funk and jazz. Naidoo's latest solo album, "Telegram für X" (+DVD, 2005) hit No. 1 in the German charts, and the acclaimed singer was honored as best national artist of the year at the 2006 German music industry's ECHO awards. Naidoo's lyrics deal with society, God and love.
