The Week in Germany: Business, Technology and the Environment January 11, 2008 European Executives Say Germany a Very Competitive Location for Business
According to top European executives, German industry is extremely competitive. This is the conclusion of an exclusive survey conducted on behalf of the economic newspaper Handelsblatt and the management consultants Droege und Comp. No other country has managed to consistently enhance its competitiveness to the same degree as Germany, according to the Handelsblatt. Fifty-nine percent of the executives polled, from six European countries, classed Germany's competitiveness as "very good" or "good". They were required to use a five-point scale on which one point corresponded to “very good” and five points to “very poor”. This survey puts Germany atop the leading European economies. Worldwide, Germany shared second place with Switzerland, trailing only China. In recent years, Germany has been able to enhance its reputation among European executives year for year. This year, its result was more than one point better than five years ago. The good news from the survey was further bolstered by predictions that a decline in Germany's jobless total last year would continue in 2008 despite recent signs of weakening economic growth. Less than two years after spiking to 5 million, Germany's number of jobless fell in November to 3.278 million people. It is the lowest level in 15 years, according to figures released by the Federal Labor Office earlier in December. (RegierungOnline/Deutsche Welle) Links: Employment
