The Week in Germany: Culture February 1, 2008 German American Hall of Fame Announces First Ten Inductees
A New York group that aims to recognize the enormous contributions of German immigrants to American society announced the first ten inductees to the “German-American Hall of Fame” (GAMHOF). “By inducting ten truly great and notable Americans into the German-American Hall of Fame,” said GAMHOF Chairman William Hetzler, “the general U.S. public will begin to have a better understanding and appreciation for the irreplaceable contributions of German immigrants to America.” According to the 2000 census, over 42 million Americans claim German heritage, which makes German-Americans the largest ethnic group in the US. Hetzler, who came to America from Germany himself in the 1950’s, founded GAMHOF in 2005 with a long term goal of establishing an interactive visitors’ center to honor the contributions German-Americans. Tributes to the ten honorees in the class of 2007 have a temporary home on the organization’s website. The GAMHOF advisory board, which includes prominent Germans and German Americans including Ambassadors Wolfgang Ischinger and Thomas Matussek, Donald Trum, and entertainers Sigfried and Roy, submitted nominations to the GAMHOF Trustees, who then chose the inductees. The inductees include German-Americans both living and dead from business (Adolphus Busch, Levi Strauss) to science (Albert Einstein) and sports (Babe ruth).
