The Week in Germany: Culture February 15, 2008 Köln Karneval Gala draws Young Professionals to German Embassy
Revelers at the Second Annual Köln Karneval Gala at the German Embassy in Washington chanted "Alaaf!" in celebration of the German-American friendship. The gala continued the Embassys "Berlin-DC Capital Connexion" event series that connects young professionals with strong leadership potential and an interest in modern Germany in the DC area.
A sell-out crowd of some 200 visitors donned their finest threads - or craziest costumes - to celebrate the traditional Rhineland way with their German hosts on Feb. 9.
Georg Schulze Zumkley, Deputy Director of the German Information Center USA, the Embassys public diplomacy section, welcomed the guests: "Get to know the real Germany it will surprise you. Germany is a blend of the traditional and the modern; let both elements intrigue you tonight. Let our message be a message of friendship." Organized by professional event managers ThingstodoDC and sponsored on site by the German Information Center USA, the Köln Karneval Gala 2008 provided the opportunity to enjoy some unique German customs in a colorful setting. The eclectic DC-area crowd of young professionals sampled the tastes, sights and sounds of Germany - without having to buy a plane ticket.
In keeping with German tradition, regional specialties including sausages,
sauerkraut and light, refreshing Kölsch beer from Cologne - Germany's
carnival capital - were served. The "Karnevalisten" were also
treated to live true-to-tradition upbeat German music and a dance performance
in the Embassy's spacious multi-purpose auditorium. A caricaturist captured
cartoonish memories for many guests, who were also enthralled by some
magical entertainment featuring live birds of peace (the white doves remained
calm despite all the ruckus!). For more fun images of the 2nd Annual Karneval Gala at the German Embassy, visit the ThingsTodoDC website. Click here to view 148 images on 17 pages. Stay in touch with Germany and find out more
