The Week in Germany: Culture March 14, 2008 Berlin's Allied Museum Brings Elvis Back to Germany
Elvis Presley went to Germany to serve on a tour of duty in the U.S. Army 50 years ago. Oct. 1, 2008, will mark the exact day of his arrival in Germany. To honor this historic anniversary, the Allied Museum in Berlin has mounted a special exhibition about Sergeant Elvis Presley and his time in the military in Germany from 1958 to 1960. The exhibition opened on March 7 and will run to May 18. Like millions of other GI's, Elvis arrived at Bremerhaven harbor on a U.S. Marine troopship. More than 1,200 soldiers were also on board with the world-famous singer. From the North Sea coast he then took a U.S. Army troop train to Friedberg, a town north of Frankfurt, where Elvis was assigned to Ray Barracks and trained as a scout platoon leader of the 3rd Armored Division. The exhibition documents Elvis's military career, including his training, maneuvers and the everyday events that other U.S. soldiers also experienced. Yet it also illustrates his unique status as a huge celebrity. From the beginning, he attracted the attention of fans who followed his every move and naturally sought opportunities to get his autograph. Countless tabloid articles, especially in the popular teen magazine Bravo, described his daily activities, the Allied Museum states on its website. "Elvis always insisted on being treated like any other U.S. soldier. He performed his duties properly and thus advanced through the ranks," it adds. In March 1960 Elvis returned to the US and continued his musical career.
The next film he made was aptly titled "GI Blues". Links: Allied
