Chart-topping German boy band Tokio Hotel has cancelled its US concerts planned for April as singer Bill Kaulitz, 18, prepared for surgery on his over-used vocal cords, it emerged last Saturday (March 29).

The pop act had earlier scratched its European concert tour because Kaulitz, idolized by hundreds of thousands of teenage girls across the globe, was at risk of turning from singer to squawker.

The band's producer-manager, David Jost, said: "Because Bill needs time to recuperate, we are cancelling all North American concerts April 17-30."

The group sold out the venues it booked for a short tour of Los Angeles, New York and Canada in February, with fans singing along to the English version of the hit "Monsoon". The group normally performs in German.

Tokio Hotel's first English-language album, "Scream", is set for release in the United States in the second week of May.

Concert promotions company Four Artists had earlier cancelled a tour that was to take place in Portugal, Spain, France and Italy, as well as Scandinavia, Slovenia and Serbia.

The vocal cords are a mucous-membrane organ that is the main feature in phonation or voice production. Growths can develop on the cords, often as a result of over-use. Singers frequently develop the condition. The voice becomes hoarse and the singer cannot maintain a note for as long as before. One common way to remove the additional tissue is by microsurgery.
