The Week in Germany: Business, Technology and the Environment May 2, 2008 European Managers Impressed with Germany
A new survey of European executives shows Germany has significantly improved its standing as a business location and is now considered the best place for doing business in Europe. The survey, which is based on responses from executives in six European countries, ranks Germany as the second most competitive location in the world after China. In 2003, when a similar survey was carried out, only 13 percent of those surveyed felt Germany was a “good” or “very good” business location. This year the share of positive responses has risen to 59 percent. No other country has managed to improve its standing more over the five-year period. The survey, commissioned by the German business daily Handelsblatt, was carried out by Droege & Comp. It asked 1,200 high-level executives for their views on which countries they see as being most competitive. Bert Rürup, chairman of Germany’s council of economic advisors, said the government, unions, and employers have all contributed to improved business conditions in the country. "The German economy has continually become more competitive in the past years, thanks in particular to companies, but also thanks to parties negotiating collective wage agreements and government policies," he said. Improved flexibility in the German labor market has been an important factor in encouraging business growth and job creation, he added. Another important factor, said Rürup, is the government’s drive to create more favorable tax conditions. Reporting the results of its executive survey, Handelsblatt cited the surge in foreign ownership of German stocks as yet further evidence of Germany’s growing attractiveness as a business location.
