The Week in Germany: Sports May 9, 2008 Soccer Legend Oliver Kahn Bids Farewell to His Fans
Global soccer superstar Oliver Kahn is trading in his gloves and cleats for a job as a sports commentator on German television. "This will surely be an exciting new challenge for me," said Bayern Munich goalie Kahn, who retired from the German national team after the 2006 World Cup. At 38 and with two decades as a pro under his belt, Kahn is nearing the end of a long and successful career. The three-time World Goalkeeper of the Year has made more than 550 Bundesliga appearances, half of them on opponents' home turf, Bayern Munich states on its website.
Before each of his last 17 Bundesliga away trips, fcbayern.de is presenting Kahn's memories of previous visits to other stadiums during these games, as the renowned keeper recalls unusual incidents and oddball situations, as well as moments of sporting drama and emotion. (The final visit is to Duisburg.) As reported by German news agency dpa, Kahn will play his last Bundesliga, or German soccer league, game on May 17 on home turf against Hertha Berlin. It will surely be an emotional farewell for him - and his many fans. Meanwhile German public broadcaster ZDF on Friday (May 9) announced that Kahn will start reporting as a soccer expert for them on sports broadcasts alongside popular German TV talkmaster Johannes B. Kerner. ZDF editor-in-chief Nikolaus Bredner said: "As a goalie Oliver Kahn stopped even the 'unstoppable' shots. He observed the game precisely from the rear and was hence always a critical step ahead of the offense. Now our viewers can look forward to such gripping analyses from the new ZDF soccer expert!"
