A Hall of Fame for German sports was inaugurated on May 6 with soccer legend Franz Beckenbauer and the late heavyweight boxing world champion Max Schmeling among the first 40 members.
German President Horst Köhler and Interior Minister Wolfgang Schäuble were present at the launch ceremony. The German Hall of Fame is a virtual institution which for now will have no permanent location.
Up to three now members can enter the Hall of Fame each year.
Of the first 40, only eight are still alive, including Beckenbauer, East German swim star Roland Matthes and ski heroine Rosi Mittermaier-Neureuther. The entries also include officials such as the former German Olympic supremo Willi Daume.
Not among the inaugural members are the likes of tennis aces Steffi Graf and Boris Becker, and Formula One record world champion Michael Schumacher.
