European Union Enlargement -- 27 Member States as of January 1, 2007
On January 1, 2007, Bulgaria and Romania became full members of the European Union, bringing the number of member states to 27. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier welcomed the two new members and wished them a smooth and successful kick-off. "We commend the great efforts that these states have undertaken since 1989-1990 to adapt their political, economic and legal frameworks to the standards of the European Union," he said on January 1. "We all know that they are still on the road towards full integration into European structures. Further progress will require considerable effort on the part of both states; it will however make Bulgaria and Romania's accession to the European Union a success that will benefit the 25 current Member states.
"With their accession to the European Union, these two countries have completed their 'return' to Europe, which commenced with the fall of the Iron Curtain." This latest accession was the sixth EU enlargement. The previous enlargement occured on May 1, 2004, when 10 countries—Poland, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Malta and Cyprus—joined the EU.
