German Embassy Celebrates Day of German Unity 2005, the 15th Anniversary of Unification
Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger opened his residence for the annual Day of German Unity celebration on October 3. Former US Secretary of State James A. Baker, the senior US official in the "Two Plus Four" negotiations which made German unification possible in 1990, was guest of honor. He was joined by Rhineland-Palatinate Minister President Kurt Beck, whose state sponsored the event. Ambassador Ischinger introduced Secretary Baker, saying, "without him, I would not stand here today as the Ambassador of a united Germany." Baker recalled his vivid memories of the Fall of the Wall in 1989 and the road to German unification in 1990. "It was the German people who were the true heroes of unification," Baker said in his remarks. "During the tragic decades of national division, they kept the faith. They knew that the Berlin Wall would ultimately come down."
Minister President Beck thanked America, especially US soldiers in Germany, for their support of Germany and German unification. "We know that we owe this fact to the contributions of all free peoples of the world, but particularly the United States, who with their friendship and also with their resolve on behalf of the US people and the US military helped bring about German reunification in peace." On the pleasant fall evening, guests filled the grassy terraces and wooded park, enjoying music performed by the German Military's Heeresmusikkorps 14 and German jazz musicians Wolf Doldinger & Friends. Guests dined on Rhineland-Palatinate specialties, some prepared by German celebrity chef Johann Lafer, and wine from Rhineland-Palatinate. October 5, 2005 Link
