German Leaders Assure Afghanistan of Continued Support in Wake of Attack Chancellor Angela Merkel telephoned Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Sunday to express her dismay at the deadly attack in Kabul that day and asked President Karzai to convey her sympathy to the victim's relatives. Merkel assured him that Germany would continue to be committed closely by Afghanistan's side. Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said he was horrified to learn of the attack on President Karzai and expressed relief that the president was not injured. The attack, for which the Taliban has claimed responsibility, "was intended to destabilize the Afghan Government and intimidate the people who are working to reconstruct Afghanistan and who want to ensure that their country has a real future" Steinmeier said in a statement on Sunday. "This tactic must not and shall not succeed." He also reiterated that Germany is a close ally of Afghanistan and its people. April 28, 2008 Links
