Former President Ford Remembered as Staunch Transatlanticist, Friend of Germany

Former President Gerald Ford was a friend of Germany and a strong supporter of transatlantic relations and cooperation, Federal President Horst Köhler and Chancellor Angela Merkel recalled in expressing their condolences to President George W. Bush and the American people.

Ford RIP Bonn: In July 1975, Chancellor Schmidt welcomed Ford to the West German capital. They are flanked by Foreign Minister Genscher and Secretary of State Kissinger.

“President Ford was a staunch transatlanticist, one of the co-signatories of the Final Act of today’s OSCE, and one of the founding fathers of the Group of leading industrialized nations, now the G8 economic summit,” Köhler wrote to Bush.“In close and particularly amicable cooperation with Chancellor Helmut Schmidt he greatly advanced the German-American partnership. In Germany his memory will be honored forever.”

Chancellor Merkel called Ford a “friend of Germany” and remarked on his leadership. “The United States of America has lost a great President, one who served his country with integrity and circumspection during difficult times.”
