Chancellor Merkel & Japanese Prime Minister Fukuda Agree on Close Cooperation on G8 Presidency

Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke with Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda on October 24. According to Government Spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm, the Chancellor used the opportunity to congratulate Fukuda in person on his accession to office last month.

Their conversation focused on Germany’s handover of the G8 presidency to Japan, international efforts in Afghanistan and the fight against transnational terrorism.

The two leaders agreed to cooperate closely on the G8 presidency. Prime Minister Fukuda told the Chancellor that his government was committed to securing Japanese support for Operation Enduring Freedom.

Chancellor Merkel renewed her invitation to Prime Minister Fukuda to attend the opening ceremony of the 2008 Hannover Messe trade fair. Japan is the fair’s official partner country at the event.
