German Navy Assumes Command of Maritime Task Force

Navy frigate at sea Fleet: The frigate Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will be the flagship of the German military force.

The German naval units deployed off the Lebanese coast became fully operational on October 15, 2006 . At the same time Germany took over from Italy the command of the Maritime Task Force (MTF).

The MTF operates under UN Resolution 1701 as part of the UNIFIL mission. Its task is to protect Lebanon's maritime borders in cooperation with the Lebanese navy. On 20 September the German Bundestag voted to make a major German contribution to stability in the region by approving the deployment of up to 2400 naval personnel to serve with the MTF.

Germany is also providing Lebanon with substantial civilian assistance.
