Germany and Russia Work on Expanding Cooperation
Though economic collaboration makes up the centerpiece of German-Russian cooperation, the two countries need to work on expanding their collaboration in other areas, Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin said after the joint governmental consultations in Wiesbaden on October 15. “We have to position our work on a broader basis,” Merkel said. People who know each other will have fewer fears and prejudices. Under this heading youth exchanges will be expanded, and the mayors of the cities of Duisburg and Perm signed a new partnership agreement. Companies in both countries will also now participate in exchanges, specifically with an exchange program for engineers. A dialogue forum will bring together small and medium-sized businesses and in December, companies in Moscow will establish a German-Russian chamber of commerce. Along with these new initiatives, economic cooperation will move beyond the energy supply sector and now also involve the auto and aircraft industries. President Putin called on Germany companies to invest even more in Russia in light of the current construction boom, saying his country wants to offer open and liberalized markets. For her part, Chancellor Merkel promoted Russian direct investment in Germany. Merkel also welcomed Russia working on joining the World Trade Organization. The liberalization of its energy and financial markets has so far been a controversial aspect in this. October 16, 2007 Link
