Merkel: I expect a High Degree of Continuity
Chancellor Angela Merkel today met the Democratic Party's probable candidate for the US presidential elections, Barack Obama. Merkel had been looking forward to the visit so that she could get to know Obama personally. The Chancellor said at her press conference yesterday that it would be an important experience for her. The two politicians had the opportunity to get to know each other during a meeting in the Chancellery. Ahead of the meeting Angela Merkel had said that she would listen very carefully to what Obama was interested in. But she also wanted to address some of her own issues: Transatlantic relations, for example, joint activities within the NATO Alliance, climate protection and world trade. "That means that I for my part will be saying that we want to put transatlantic relations on as broad a footing as possible," the Chancellor said. After the meeting with the Chancellor, Barack Obama will this afternoon be meeting Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Then this evening Senator Obama will be giving a speech in front of the Siegessäule, the Victory Column, in Berlin. It will be his only public speech during his trip to the Middle East and Europe.
