Chancellor Merkel and Foreign Minister Steinmeier meet with Senator Obama
Chancellor Angela Merkel met the Democratic Party's probable candidate for the US presidential elections, Barack Obama. Merkel had been looking forward to the visit so that she could get to know Obama personally. The Chancellor said at her press conference yesterday that it would be an important experience for her. The two politicians had the opportunity to get to know each other during a meeting in the Chancellery. Ahead of the meeting Angela Merkel had said that she would listen very carefully to what Obama was interested in. But she also wanted to address some of her own issues: Transatlantic relations, for example, joint activities within the NATO Alliance, climate protection and world trade. "That means that I for my part will be saying that we want to put transatlantic relations on as broad a footing as possible," the Chancellor said.
Mr.Steinmeier, on emerging from his talks with Senator Obama, expressed his satisfaction with the meeting. He said "During this conversation I observed once again that our foreign policy philosophy of 'cooperation not confrontation' is also at the heart of his ideas on foreign policy." Steinmeier expressed his satisfaction with the talks, "because we agree on our engagement in the key crisis regions". "Today's talks built on a telephone conversation of 11 April 2008 between the Federal Foreign Minister and Senator Obama, which took place while Steinmeier was in Washington, and which focused on climate issues, disarmament and international engagement. Today's talks in the Federal Foreign Office were held in a frank and amicable atmosphere. Federal Minister Steinmeier told the Senator about his initiative for a New Transatlantic Agenda and called in this context for enhanced transatlantic cooperation on the environment and the climate, as well as on disarmament and arms control. Steinmeier also talked about Germany's engagement in Afghanistan and emphasized the necessary complementarity between civilian reconstruction and military security."
