House, Senate Resolutions Commend Germany on Terrorism Arrests
Following the arrests in September 2007, by German authorities of three men now charged with planning terrorist attacks on US and German targets, US legislators passed resolutions in both houses of Congress commending German authorities as well as recognizing the role of US intelligence in providing information. “German authorities acted swiftly and decisively to prevent a horrific attack that could have come within days of the arrests,” states House Resolution 639, sponsored by Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-CA) and approved on September 17. “The successful collaborative action by United States and German authorities prevented the possible deaths of many innocent people.” The House resolution was cosponsored by eight members across party lines: Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Lantos (D-CA), Europe Subcommittee chairman Robert Wexler (D-FL), Foreign Affairs Committee ranking member Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), and Representatives Dan Burton (R-IN), Henry Brown Jr. (R-SC), Alcee Hastings (D-FL), Ted Poe (R-TX) and Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA). Senator Bob Bennett (R-UT) introduced a similarly-worded Senate resolution, which was approved on October 4. October 10, 2007 Links
