Iran: Ambassador Scharioth Interviewed by Voice of America for Live Farsi Broadcast
In a live television interview broadcast by Voice of America in Iran during prime time Sunday night, Ambassador Klaus Scharioth talked with journalist Bijan Farhoodi and took viewer questions via phone and email on the topic of Iran. According to VOA, 15 to 20 million people regularly watch the Farsi-language program containing the one-hour interview. The central discussion topic was the agreement reached in Berlin on January 22 on how to proceed in regard to Iran's nuclear program. The Chinese, German, French, UK, Russian and US foreign ministers, along with the EU High Representative for the CFSP, agreed on a new draft UN Security Council resolution tightening sanctions. Germany, France and the UK, on behalf of the group, will now present the draft resolution to the Security Council. Ambassador Scharioth emphasized that the stricter measures by the international community are not aimed against the Iranian people, but against the Iranian government to move them to a constructive position and to settle the conflict over Iran's nuclear program. German-Iranian trade relations, the status of human rights in Iran and the denial of the Holocaust, also came up during the discussion. January 29, 2008 Links
