Foreign Minister Steinmeier on the outcome of the Climate Change Conference in Bali
On Saturday (Dec. 15) the delegates at the UN Climate Change Conference in Bali agreed to draw up a successor to the Kyoto Protocol in the course of the next two years. Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier welcomed the agreement reached following tough negotiations and thanked Federal Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel for his dedication and commitment: "I am delighted that the delegates at the Climate Change Conference in Bali managed to reach agreement after difficult negotiations. The fact that all key states, in particular the US and China, are on board is a great success. All participating countries made it clear that they want to redouble their efforts to protect the climate. We now have to make use of this momentum to boost the negotiations on a successor to the Kyoto Protocol. Of course, we Germans, along with the European Union, would have liked to see bolder concessions in Bali. However, the international community's unity of purpose was of paramount importance. For comprehensive and effective progress can only be made on that basis. During the coming two years, we will continue to work hard to convince others to support this undertaking and to champion ambitious reduction targets. In addition to this, we, together with our European partners and a number of US states, will press on with our efforts to standardize the emissions trading systems. I would like to express special thanks to Sigmar Gabriel. It would not have been possible to reach agreement in Bali without his energetic and courageous commitment. Even in seemingly hopeless moments when the negotiations were completely deadlocked, he didn't give up." December 17, 2007
