German G8 Presidency Organizes Coordination Conference on Reconstruction of Afghanistan

Steinmeier

A high-level international coordination conference on the reconstruction of Afghanistan will be held at the Federal Foreign Office on January 30 and 31.

The meeting of the Joint Coordination and Monitoring Board (JCMB) will take place at the political directors' level and will bring 25 delegations to Berlin, including one from Afghanistan.

At the London conference (January 31 to February 1, 2006) the JCMB, as the central coordination committee for Afghan reconstruction, was charged with coordinating the measures for the next five years agreed on by the Afghan Government and its partners in the international community. The Afghan Government and the United Nations are co-chairs of the JCMB.

Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Afghan Foreign Minister Rangin Spanta will open the conference.

One year after the London conference, this meeting will provide the first opportunity to take political stock. In organizing this conference, Germany, in its current role as President of the G8, is supporting the urgent wish of the international community to step up the coordination of the reconstruction efforts and especially to intensify their civilian components and their impact throughout the country.

Tom Koenigs, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Afghanistan, will attend the conference, as well as numerous members of the Afghan cabinet.
