In the light of the demonstrations against the military government in Myanmar, Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement today (25 September) before flying to New York for the United Nations General Assembly:
"The German Government continues to follow the situation in Myanmar very closely. Our main concern is the welfare of the peaceful demonstrators. I urge the military government to refrain from using force. Violent means should not be used to prevent citizens from expressing their opinions peacefully.
During Germany's EU Presidency, we discussed the situation in Myanmar in depth and frankly with ASEAN and ASEM states. I am deeply concerned that no tangible progress has been made in the pledged transition to a non-military and democratically legitimized government and urge Myanmar to step up its efforts to bring about national reconciliation.
To this end, the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi must be released without delay. The release of the opposition politicians imprisoned recently is another requisite contribution towards national reconciliation.
We will also discuss the situation in Myanmar in New York this week. The United Nations, as well as regional partners and the ASEAN Community, can provide key impetus for a process of national reconciliation."
