Middle East Quartet Meeting in Washington
The continuing tense situation in the Middle East makes it even more important that the Quartet is meeting now, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said today in Washington, where he will attend a meeting of the Middle East Quartet at the US State Department. The international community has an obligation to support peace efforts and to set new political impulses in the framework of the Quartet, Steinmeier said. It is important that we set a working process in motion today, he said before the day’s meetings. The Quartet—United Nations, European Union, United Sates and Russia—is meeting at the foreign minister level for the first time since September 2006. Foreign Minister Steinmeier and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice announced this meeting when Rice was in Berlin on January 17. Foreign Minister Steinmeier is representing the EU Council Presidency. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon are participating. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is hosting the meeting at the State Department. Also attending are EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana and EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner. February 2, 2007 Links
