Celebrating German Unity with Saxon Flair
Well over 2,000 guests celebrated German unification and German-American friendship Tuesday night at the German-Ambassador's Residence in Washington, D.C. With the motto, “Baroque Meets High Tech,” the Free State of Saxony was the main supporter of the evening, with corporate sponsor AMD, a California-based microprocessor manufacturer with locations in Saxony.
Throughout the terraced garden under a moonlit sky, partygoers dined on traditional German foods, like sauerkraut-filled Maueltaschen (pasta squares), Frikadellen (beef patties), Weißwurst (veal sausage) and Schnudendunker, (potato casserole). In addition to Radeberger beer on tap, two Saxon wineries, Schloss Wackerbarth and Schloss Proschwitz were able to quench people’s thirst.
For dessert, fresh Dresdener Stollen, in seemingly endless amounts was provided in the dining room, where guests could also watch as Saxon craftspeople demonstrated the arts of painting Wendt & Kühn wooden angels and figurines, painting Meissen Porcelain, and handcrafting Glashütte watches.
The musical highlight of the evening may have been the U.S. debut of the carbon composite “high-tech violin” developed and handcrafted in Saxony and compared in sound quality to Stradivari masterpieces. Also, throughout the evening, vocalists and a pianist from the Semper Opera House in Dresden performed, along with a woodwind quintet from the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden (Saxon State Orchestra). In the beer garden, jazz banjoist and vocalist Cynthia Sayer kept things swinging well past midnight. October 4, 2006 *by Victor Holt for the German Embassy Links
