Solidarity Fund Gives $200,000 Each to Two Relief Groups

On hand to receive the donations from Ambassador Ischinger, center, were Admiral Jerry Johnson, right, president of the Navy & Marine Corps Relief Society, and Lt. General Nathanial R. Thompson Jr., Ret., president of the Army Emergency Relief Society.

The German American Solidarity Fund gave a total of $400,000 to two groups assisting victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks and their families, in a continuing effort to distribute the more than $5 million that have been raised by the fund. Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger presented $200,000 each to the Navy & Marine Corps Relief Society and to the Army Emergency Relief Society on November 20. Both groups are helping the victims of the Pentagon attack and their families. They will use the donations to provide scholarships to the children of victims, including children not yet born. The donation from the Solidarity Fund is the largest single contribution received by the Navy & Marine Corps Relief Society.

The Ambassador established the German American Solidarity Fund in the days after the terrorist attacks as a gesture of the close friendship the two countries share. It has received donations from Germans and Americans in the US and in Germany, as well as multi-national corporations and grass-roots organizations.
